I always believed in a god. My thoughts were just, "If there is a god he must be huge, must be so unapproachable. And if he's so real and so holy, I'm sure he would have nothing to do with me".
My life had no purpose. I was very easily swayed, I didn't know what I stood for and I certainly had nothing to stand for. No cause, nothing to give my life to.
I came to Church when I was 17. I had never set foot in a church in all my life, had never met a Christian before and didn’t know a thing about God.
I started searching the Bible to find the part about Jesus’ death on the cross. Problem was, I was so clueless I started looking for it in the book of Revelation (the last book of the Bible). I just assumed that Jesus was the main character and He died so that must be at the end of the story. It turned out there was a lot more to it! (And if you’re wondering, the part about His death can be found in the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John). Anyway, it’s safe to say I knew nothing!
My journey of coming to know God was a bit of a slow process but once I discovered Christ I was all in.
I found that God really was there, keen to hang out and it turns out He’s very approachable. Once I found who He was, I never turned back.
When I met the Lord it was like I found gold. Yes, sounds a little in the cliché side of things but I now had purpose to my life, something more than living for the weekend or the next big thing. Something I could give my life to. Everything I always wanted but never knew if I would actually attain.
What is Water Baptism?
To me Water Baptism is an outward expression of an inward devotion.
It's a symbol of being cleansed from our past, and is the next reasonable step in our Christian faith.
It’s a public step to make a stand for God. Regardless of your current circumstance and what you’re travelling through.
Why Baptism for You?
For me my Christian walk hasn’t so much been about trying to figure everything out perfectly. I’ve just always felt that sense of wonder, “Wow, God’s actually real.” So when it comes to things like getting water baptised I just had that same attitude of, “Yep, I’m all in! God’s into it, so I’m into it.”
I’m not talking about being naïve, easily manipulated or just accepting anything without reasoning it out. What I’m saying is, when you meet Jesus, when you find out how real He is you’re in, you want to move forward.
To me, getting Baptised was a natural response from my encounter with God. I just thought, ‘Yep, I’m into it.” So when it came to an opportunity for me to take the big plunge into that warmish bath tub, I was keen!
I decided to get Baptised 2 years into my relationship with God. I still remember that cold night! I remember the sense of expectation I had beforehand.
Here’s the thing; I got dunked, said a prayer and wrapped a towel around me.I wish I could tell you I had a dramatic sky opening, dove descending, ‘audible voice of God’ moment, but I didn’t. To the average bystander I still looked like the same guy I was before (now just wearing wet clothes & trying not to slip on the church tiles).
But as I came out of that pool, I felt like I had come out a new person.
That night I believe God gave me a fresh start. Sure, when I first came to the Lord it was me accepting Him into my already interesting life, but that night I feel I was truly given a clean slate, old shackles, old struggles melted away.
God changes you from the inside out.
What I love about God is that He makes me new. Everything inside me has been made new and will continue to be made new. Made afresh, clean, free of anxiety, free of the past. FREE.
Although, everyone has a different experience with God when they get baptised, what I can promise you is this: God’s Word is true. He is faithful to His Word and it will never depart from you. When you give your life to Christ He says we are cleansed; we are free and made new.
This is real. Regardless of how you may be feeling. He makes all things new. Allow Him to do something amazing in your life as you take that step to the water.

A Bit About Byers
I first came to church when I was 17. I walked into the Young Adults service and have been there ever since. Next year will be my 10 year anniversary of knowing God and being in church.I’m 26 years young and a Pastor in the Young Adults department of C3 Church, Oxford Falls. My wife Lisa and I have been attending C3 Church for 9 years now and have been married for 4 years. We met at C3 College (horrible cliché, yes I know). We look after the Young Adult age connect groups and basically help people get established and feel at home in church-life. (Not too shabby if I do say so myself).
And there you go; that’s me in a few bullet points.
