6 Keys To Kickstart Personal Evangelism (Pt.1)

The following post is written by an incredible Young Adult in our Church, Michael Forsyth.

Michael is a gifted evangelist and is passionate about seeing the lost saved! He recently lead a training session with our Young Adult leaders and we're excited to be able to share his notes with you. Keep reading below for part one.

“Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover"

The Great Commission is at the core of our calling as followers of Jesus. Not one of us is excluded and for many, it can seem an insurmountable task. So where do we start?

Here are 6 keys to help us start evangelising!

You cannot communicate Christ if you don’t understand his message. Therefore write out what you believe is the message of Christ. One thing that I have come to realise is the gospel speaks for itself as the Holy Spirit uses the message of truth. We see this when Paul through the Holy Spirit says “I am unashamed of the Gospel as it is the power of God unto Salvation”.

The Power of God is released through the unrestrained truth of this message. But when we water it down in order to make it more palatable, we also water down the power and conviction that it carries. We must never compromise the message and must be truthful -showing that the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus.

The Power of God is released through the unrestrained truth of this message.

We must be truthful that one must repent of their Sin. When you emphasise the enormity of the issue of Sin and then tell Gods grace in Jesus Christ the contrast between the two emphasises even further the Love of God. Therefore, never water down the message to be “politically correct”.

Here is an outline of how I would communicate the gospel:

The book of Romans is the place I found great revelation of the Gospel. It’s important to read the scriptures and let the Holy Spirit speak and seal things in your heart. Ultimately when you are preparing the Gospel message you want to explain why with sin in our lives we cannot stand before God and have to be spirited and know why with Jesus we can stand before God. I recommend doing a Bible study into the righteousness of Christ as he gives us a perfect standing before God.

  1. When I am sharing I always set the context with 'God is a loving God'
  2. Then I'll talk about sin and its consequences.
  3. Finally I express the Love of God again in Christ and his amazing sacrifice and now how trusting in Christ gives me a right standing before God

“they overcame him by the blood of the lamb and the word of their testimony and they did not love their lives to death” - Revelation 12:11

Your testimony is more powerful than you think! The Holy Spirit uses testimonies to open people’s eyes to the fact that Jesus Christ changes lives. The testimony is a fantastic lead into telling people about Christ. A testimony is any experience you’ve had that reveals the power of God; such as stories of Salvation, healing and provision. The power of your own testimony is that the person you are talking to can’t dispute your personal experience. I use testimonies to reveal why I believe in Jesus and why I believe the Bible is God’s word. It helps people to understand that I don’t just believe because someone else told me it was a good idea!

“He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is mine and declare it you” -  John 16:14

Your testimonies glorify Christ and therefore invokes the power of the Holy Spirt. Even when you feel like your story isn’t much when you share it you can find out later on down the track that it really impacted someone.

3.     Have a personal relationship with God everyday

Everyday, it is incredibly important that you are connecting with God and seeking his face more than you are seeking his hand. Pure worship is expressing your love for God because of who He is not just what he can do for you. You will find that as you spend time with God in the private, there is an overflow of Christ into your public life. Evangelism is an overflow of thankfulness for God.

We should be mobilised to action because of Christ’s love, our knowledge of the eternal destiny of others, and the power of the spirt.

Jesus said that those who love him keep his commandments. One of his commandments being “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature”. Your love for God is not expressed by the amount of souls you win it is about having the heart and passion to see people encounter Jesus and inherit eternal life. This all comes from a love from God. Paul says that it is the love of Christ that compels him. We should be mobilised to action because of Christ’s love, our knowledge of the eternal destiny of others, and the power of the spirt.
